Honduras La Union Honduras 2009 VIM Project Dates: January 2 - 14,
2009
La Union is a community in the mountains of Eastern Honduras.
La Union is almost straight East of Tegucigalpa, right on the
border of Nicaragua. La Union is a community of about 50
families. La Union is in a group of 4 communities, La
Union, San Antonio, Las Colinas and Santa Rosa. These 4
communities are working together to tap several water sources
and bring water to all 4 communities. The first year we will need the most project funds. There will be several storage tanks built and the water lines that supply these tanks will need to be large.

Mission to the People of Honduras - A note from Boyd Funk Have you ever seen a boy fire a rifle for the first time? A small finger gently squeezes the trigger. What a surprise! Bang! Smoke, fire, a reaction of surprise, even when the boy knew what was coming. Our water projects in Honduras are somewhat like firing that shot. With a little effort on our part we pull the trigger that makes a dramatic change in the lives of others. I have witnessed a lot of people get water from the tap in their yard for the first time and know what the reaction is going to be. Even though I have seen peoples' reactions before and know what to expect, it is still a thrill! This year we will undertake the largest water project that we have done so far. It will take 2 years to complete. Our plan is that teams from Garden City will go in January of 2009 and again in 2010, also a High School team will go in the summer of 2009. We have asked a group from Wheaton College to work during their spring break in 2009 and they have agreed to do so. Several other groups have been invited to help and I’m sure some of them will. This project will bring water to 4 rural communities, a total of approximately 2,000 people will get water from this system. We are estimating 30 miles of pipe will be needed and several storage tanks. Several water sources will be taped to acquire enough water to supply the need. Garden City FUMC has made the commitment for 2009 to send a team in January and a High School team in the summer. These team members will pay their own expenses for their trip. What we need is your help to provide $50,000 in project funds. 100% of what you give will go toward purchasing supplies. Pipe, storage tanks, professional engineering services, transportation of supplies are all needed to make this project successful. The people of the communities had an engineering study made of the possibility of getting water to them in 1994. They have worked since that time to find some help to complete a water system. When we agreed to take on this project the men of the community immediately started digging trenches. The people in these communities are very excited and I’m sure they will do whatever they can to help to complete this project. I hope you will consider a gift to help make their dream come Boyd Funk

Project Funds We will need approximately $50,000.00 this first year of the project. As a team member you will be expected to help raise funds. 2009 Honduras Team to be
announced soon! We will have a maximum of 17 persons on our team. Participants must be 16 years of age or older. A parent must accompany persons under the age of 18. The Work & Living Conditions The work will be hand labor. This is a mountainous area. We will dig trenches, glue PVC pipe and cover the trench. During the afternoons we will do programs for the children. We will meet with the local people during most evenings. Team members will be given an opportunity to share their faith. We will stay in a home or a tent. There will be limited electricity, by generator. The local people will cook for us. Food will be simple: beans, rice, fruit, etc. This is a mountainous area and the work is physical. You will need to be in good physical condition. You should be able to walk mountain trails. The People of La Union Most of the people live in small adobe homes. This is a coffee growing area but people usually grow corn and beans for their personal use. We will not be far from a main dirt road. On this main road there is a small store. There are several one or two room schools in the area. Most of the people have gone to grade school and can read.

La Union... We will ride in the back of a truck. We will go east of Tegucigalpa to Danli. We will spend the first night in Danli at a motel. The following day it will be about a 2 hour drive on dirt roads and trails. La Union is very close to the border of Nicaragua.
